With net zero featuring a lot in the media at the moment, many businesses are looking to increase their green credentials and create a path towards net-zero ambitions. One of the easiest and first steps to take is switching your energy contracts over to renewable electricity and green gas.

Having reviewed the data from our electricity purchases, most of our clients have already selected renewable energy. Of all the electricity purchased so far this year, 97% was from renewable sources which include solar, wind, hydro and biomass. This represents a progressive switch over recent years as more businesses make the move to greener electricity.

Renewable electricity

Renewable electricity has grown in its capacity over the last few years with many UK records being broken, including coal-free periods of up to two months earlier in June. This has largely been due to the increase in yield of electricity from wind and solar as well as the country reducing the reliance on coal power.

The cost of renewable electricity from wind and solar has also declined as the technology has advanced and subsidies have supported their development until the last year when the first subsidy-free PV developments were started. This has led to renewable energy being more in line with the cost of energy from power stations.

There is often no premium for renewable electricity tariffs anymore and competitive rates are available that are as good for the wallet as for the environment. So, it’s worth comparing renewable only electricity next time you are reviewing your contract.

Green gas

Green gas at present isn’t as comparable and competitively priced as conventional gas as it is still very early days for it, but many suppliers are now offering green gas tariffs. However, recent announcements about halving emissions from the oil and gas industries and calls for funding to help develop a clean heat network may see a growth in green gas that could see it becoming more available and increase economies of scale.

Purchasing green gas is still a good option to those businesses who want to reduce their carbon emissions and increase their environmental credentials as it can help considerably reduce your carbon footprint if your business consumes a lot of gas.

Why choose renewable or green energy?

Renewable or green energy is better for the environment and will assist you in meeting your own carbon targets and reporting such as SECR. It also makes your business more responsible and environmentally friendly which can increase your business’ credentials with customers and employees. Many experts are also predicting that in a post-COVID-19 world, environment credentials will become more important for consumers.
